Readings & Lectures

Be part of the magic when a new play is born!

New plays are developed through the Purple Rose’s unique “greenhouse” process, so-named because it is how we “grow” new plays and playwrights. A greenhouse provides a playwright and the budding script with several days to a week of rehearsal and culminates in a concert reading for a live audience.

Concert readings offer advance looks at plays under consideration for upcoming seasons. These special events are free of charge and feature open forum discussion with the playwright and director. Audience feedback helps shape the script as it moves toward full production and gives us valuable insight into what you are interested in seeing on our stage.

In parallel to our ongoing schedule of greenhouse concert readings, the Purple Rose offers a variety of lectures and panel discussions with playwrights, directors, designers and actors about the development of new plays. Also free of charge, our lecture series provides Purple Rose artists an opportunity to share their stories with you, stories about the production behind every great production.

Specific events in our greenhouse concert reading schedule and lecture series are posted online and announced in our monthly email newsletter. If you are interested in hosting members of our company for a reading or panel discussion with your organization, please contact our marketing director Heidi Bennett for availability.
