The
World Premiere production of
The
Harmony Codes by Michael Grady started out the 1995 - 1996
season at The Purple Rose. Anthony Caselli directed this lighthearted
science-fiction romp, where kooky space aliens bump up against
All-American Midwestern folks, as human and aliens both go hunting
for life’s answers.
Margaret has enough problems with a rebellious teenage daughter and a husband who would rather watch the game. The situation escalates when aliens arrive, initially posing as milkmen.
When Margaret informs them that milkmen disappeared in the 1970s, and delivered milk in the morning in any case, they immediately morph into policemen. The aliens tell Margaret that they’re after the “codes” by which humans live their lives, which sends the housewife on a frantic search as she tries to figure out what might satisfy them.
The Harmony Codes spins a story
of
galactic truths, nuclear families and what happens to those who
march to the beat of a different drummer in a small town.
