The World Premiere of Jeff Daniels' The Vast Difference, directed by T. Newell Kring, is a comedy about male mid-life crisis and our perspectives on gender identity. Protagonist George Noonan is a nearly middle-aged man in a fog about his role in life. He's a flight attendant for Heartland commuter airlines, serving "all the exciting locations in the Midwest."
His wife has given him five daughters and constantly nags him to get a vasectomy, and he's tortured by visits from his long-deceased father, a man's man and devotee of John Wayne and the Detroit Tigers. Dad, who was a barber, can't stand the thought of his boy being a "stewardess" and George isn't too keen on all the jokes at his expense.
After
the shock of his urologist turning out to be an attractive thirtysomething
woman, George begins confiding in her. Dr. Howard, a urologist
with a witty sense of humor, lends as unsympathetic an ear as she
can, eventually persuading George that his masculinity is measured
by his life's good deeds, but only after he's endured several hilarious
adventures.
The
cast of The Vast Difference featured John Seibert, Jean
Lyle Lepard, Guy Sanville and Janet Maylie in the principal roles.
Assorted roles were played by Peter Bellanca, Daniel C. Jacobs,
Jr., Wayne David Parker, and Brian Schulz.
