Voice & Movement is the perfect way for the actor and the non-actor alike to shake off the last of the winter blues. Resident artist Michelle Mountain has been teaching this class since 2000. This is her 3rd year team-teaching with resident artist Stacie Hadgikosti, and she’s very excited about the way the class has evolved as the company has grown:
“The focus of the class has really become finding yourself: your voice, your heart. All of our other classes focus on making it about your partner. What’s beautiful and exciting about this class is giving students the opportunity to crash headlong into themselves. I love watching people bump into themselves. I love the intimacy of the voice and movement work, the discovery of self, of realizing how much more you have to offer than you ever thought. The work in this class is about “me,” about discovering “me” and what that means, and that’s not something we normally get to do. And we take care of each other; it’s generous and gentle and spontaneous and goofy and fun.”
Here’s what students from last year’s class had to say:
“I liked most the invitation to examine me. In my working life in the theatre, my energies are focused on other actors and on serving the director’s vision. In Voice & Movement, I could focus on understanding my whole instrument and what its strengths and weaknesses are. The most practical thing I took away from the class that immediately had a positive bearing on my career was the importance of locating and releasing tension in my voice and body. Utilizing various relaxation techniques before working onstage or auditioning has been invaluable to me.”
-Rusty Mewha
“I learned a lot about myself and had a great time doing it! Michelle and Stacie are excellent teachers and provide a safe and comfortable environment in which to work. I highly recommend Voice & Movement to any actor of any age. This class helped me to become more comfortable in my own body. I also think it helps free you so that you can do your best work! Two thumbs up!!”
-Nicholas LaGrassa
“I liked the fact that every one (the students and instructors) were serious-minded, but … not uptight. Voice & Movement helped me to accept myself and others with out all the judgment. It was a fun class, and I would recommend it to any one.”
